The Trinity Bible College Lions started the season off
quickly with two wins but as of late the Lions were struggling losing three
straight games. Finally, back home for the first time in four games the Lions
welcomed the NAIA Peru State Bobcats.
The Lions who would win the toss and
elect to receive, wanted to set the tone for the afternoon and they would. They
drove 62 yards in eight plays taking two minutes and 54 seconds to score on the
opening drive of the game. The drive was capped off by Donald Knight (Apopka,
FL) who scored on a two yard run, with Austin Bowman’s (Oshkosh, WI) successful
extra point the Lions held a 7-0 lead. Peru State would add a field goal to the
scoreboard on a 32 yard field goal by Levi Cockle after a 13 play 46 yard drive
that ate up seven minutes and 55 seconds. At the end of the first quarter the
Lions held a 7-3 lead.
In the second quarter the Lions
looked to widen their lead and they did so after a five play 69 yard drive, in
which Brandon Welch (Orlando, FL) would find Barry Bighorn (Culbertson, MT) on
a 34 yard touchdown pass. After a failed two point conversion try, the Lions
were up 13-3. The Lions then would score with no time left on the clock in the
first half on a nine yard touchdown pass from Brandon Welch to Khalil Ervin (Philadelphia,
PA). Then the Lions extra point try was blocked and returned by Trey Rigby for
two points by Peru State, giving the Lions an unusual 19 – 5 lead.
After a scoreless third quarter the
Lions would put the finishing touches on the victory with the longest play from
scrimmage for the Lions all year. Brandon Welch would find Barry Bighorn for
another touchdown but this time is was a 92 yard touchdown pass from Welch to
Bighorn. The Lions would score one more
time on a 21 yard touchdown pass from Welch to Shean Bosworth (Winchester, IN).
The 31 – 5 victory over Peru State
moves the Lions to 3-3 on the year and 2-0 so far at home. Brandon Welch had an
excellent game going 22 of 37 for 412 yards and four touchdowns with zero
interceptions. Donald Knight led the team in receptions with seven for 93
yards, while Barry Bighorn led in receiving yards with four catches for 210
yards and two touchdowns. Leading the Lions defense was Cole White (Grass
Valley, CA) with 14 total tackles with two tackles for loss. Chance Baker
(Norco, CA) added 12 total tackles and one sack. Aaron Conner (Nebraska City,
NE) had eight total tackles and one sack of his own, while Fred Herman (Coconut
Grove, FL) had eight total tackles as well.
The next game for the Lions is their
Homecoming game Saturday, October 15th against Robert Morris. Kick-off
is noon.
