The Trinity Bible College Lions welcomed the Robert Morris
Eagles to town for their Homecoming game on Saturday, October 15th.
Both the Lions and Eagles were coming off wins, with the Lions record 3-3 on
the year and the Eagles was 2-4. There was a large crowd on hand to watch the
game.
The Eagles
won the toss and elected to receive. After trading punts in the first couple
possessions, the Lions recovered a fumble on a punt return. The Lions would
capitalize on the Eagles turnover with a six play, 30 yard drive that was
capped with a 12 yard touchdown pass from Jason Elliott (Thedford, NE) to
Khalil Ervin (Philadelphia, PA). The extra point try was blocked giving the
Lions an early 6-0 lead. Robert Morris would answer scoring the next two
touchdowns of the game, both in the 2nd quarter. The first score
would come on a six yard touchdown pass from Matt Westerkamp to Deshawn Weaver.
The Eagles then would recover a Lions fumble in the end zone for a touchdown
just over a minute later. The extra point try was missed, giving the Eagles a
13-6 lead. Trinity would put together another nice drive, 14 plays for 72 yards
taking up five minutes and 32 seconds. The drive was finished off by Donald
Knight (Apopka, FL) with a one yard touchdown run; the Lions then would try for
a two point conversion and failed. Robert Morris held a one point lead at half
time 13-12.
The Lions
would strike first in the 2nd half, just 5 minutes into the 3rd
quarter, Jason Elliott scored on a two yard rush, finishing a seven play, 60
yard drive. Brandon Welch (Orlando, FL) found Shean Bosworth (Winchester, IN)
for the two point conversion, giving the Lions the lead 20-13. They would hold
on to that lead going into the 4th quarter. The Eagles would score
three touchdowns in a matter of just four minutes. Their first score was on a
19 yard touchdown pass from Matt Westerkamp to TaDarrius Douglass. The extra
point try was blocked by the Lions, giving the Lions a 20-19 lead. Robert
Morris would then recover their onside kick attempt and would score after a
five play, 47 yard drive on a Westerkamp 10 yard pass to Deshawn Weaver. They
would fail to convert a two point conversion try giving them the lead 25-20.
The Lions then would turn the ball over on their next possession and the Eagles
capitalized on the miscue scoring just three plays later on another Westerkamp
touchdown pass 16 yards to Deshawn Weaver. They would fail to convert the two
point try again. The Lions would score with just under three minutes to play on
what was one of the most exciting catches of the year for the Lions. Brandon
Welch would connect with Jason Elliott, who made a spectacular one handed catch
and scored on a 73 yard touchdown pass. The two point try for the Lions failed
putting the Lions down 31-26. The Lions would get one last chance to drive and
score with 30 seconds left in the game, but they came up short, failing to
convert on a fourth down.
The loss
drops the Lions to 3-4 on the season and 2-1 at home. Brandon Welch had another
good game passing for the Lions, going 18 of 38 for 282 yards and one
touchdown. Khalil Ervins led the Lions in receiving with nine catches for 98
yards and one touchdown. Jason Elliott was Mr. Versatile scoring three different
ways in the game. Elliott would score one rushing touchdown, one receiving
touchdown and threw for one touchdown. Leading the Lions once again on defense
was Cole White (Grass Valley, CA) with 16 total tackles and 1.5 tackles for
loss. Fred Herman (Coconut Grove, FL) added nine total tackles and Chance Baker
(Norco, CA) added eight total tackles as well.
The Lions have a bye week this week;
their next game is Saturday, October 29th at 2pm against Dakota
College. This will be the Lions last home game of the season.
