Lady Lions Use Big First Half to Beat Presentation College

The Trinity Lady Lions Basketball team is off to a good start to their 2011-2012 season. The Lady Lions going into Thursday Night’s contest were 5-3 on the season and looking to add another win to the total. They welcomed their rival from just 40 miles down highway 281, the Presentation College Saints to Ray Ulmer Fieldhouse.

The Lady Lions came out fast with two quick steals and two and one baskets by junior guard Treva Nutter (Thedford, NE) and freshman Hannah Kovarik (Thedford, NE). In the first seven minutes of the game the Lady Lions would go an 18 to 2 run. Just four minutes after that, the Lady Lions used good defense and push their lead to 34 to 9 with nine minutes left in the first half. Presentation would capitalize on the Lady Lions foul trouble to close the gap in the first half. The Saints would go 19 of 21 from the free throw line in the first half to keep the Lady Lions halftime lead 50 to 34. Five of the Lady Lions were in foul trouble to end the first half, all with three personal fouls. Treva Nutter had a big first half for the Lady Lions with 19 points and Shianne Montgomery (Charlo, MT) had 10 points.

The Saints would not go away in the second half very easily. The Lady Lions would get a head as much as 21 points, which would be the largest lead they would hold in the second half. Presentation would use a 20 to 9 run over ten minutes to get within ten points 68 to 58 with five minutes left in the game. They would get as close as six points but the Lady Lions held on to win 72 to 66 for their first win over Presentation College in at least a decade.

The Lady Lions were led in scoring by Shianne Montgomery, who finished with 20 points and 3 steals. Treva Nutter finished the game with 19 points and 9 assists. Sophomore guard Kylie Flemmer (Beulah, ND) had a good defensive game with 8 steals to go along with 8 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

The win moves the Lady Lions to 6-3 on the year. They have two more games in a row this weekend. They play Friday Night at 6pm against Providence College and Saturday afternoon at 12pm against Providence College again.
