The Lady Lions took only one day to celebrate their third
straight NIAC conference tournament championship and then it was back to work
for them as they prepared for the North Central Regional Tournament and a
chance to advance to the NCCAA DII Women’s National Tournament. They would not
have to travel far, as it was Trinity Bible College’s turn to host the North
Central Region Tournament. The first round match ups were #1 seed North Central
University vs. #4 seed Faith Baptist Bible College and on the other side of the
bracket #2 seed Trinity Bible College vs. #3 seed Providence College. Both the
#1 seed North Central University and the #2 seed Trinity Bible College won
their first round games easily with North Central winning 76 to 40 over Faith
Baptist and Trinity Bible College winning 68 to 36 over Providence College, thus
setting up a rematch of last year’s North Central Region Championship. The two
teams also played once this year with North Central coming out on top at home
65 to 60.
This
year’s championship game would prove to be another 40 minute battle, with both
teams being tied 6 to 6 just 3 minutes into the game and with the Lady Lions
leading 21 to 20 halfway through the first half. The Lady Lions would hold
their biggest lead of the first half 31 to 25 with 6 minutes left, but North
Central would use a 15 to 9 run to close the half and both teams would be tied
at 40 at halftime. Leading North Central at half with 14 points was Christina
Goodman and Courtney Smith added 13 first half points of her own, while the
Lady Lions were led by Treva Nutter who had 13 points and Kayla Droste who had
8 points and 8 rebounds.
The
second half featured a lot more defense for both teams. Both teams would trade
several leads during the second half with the Lady Lions leading 46 to 42 with
13 minutes left. North Central battled back taking a 4 point lead 52 to 56 with
7 minutes left, the Lady Lions would counter taking the lead back with 4
minutes to play 60 to 58. The Lady Lions would then find themselves down by 1
point with less than one minute to play with the ball under their own basket.
They would execute a nice inbounds play and Kayla Droste would make a lay up to
give the Lady Lions a 65 to 64 advantage. Treva Nutter would add two free
throws to seal the game and the Lady Lions held on to win 67 to 64. Leading the
Lady Lions in the win was junior guard Treva Nutter who had 25 points (8 of 16
from the field and 9 of 10 on free throws), the only other Lady Lion in double
figures was sophomore Kayla Droste who tallied a double-double with 15 points
(6 of 11 shooting) and had 12 rebounds (7 offensive). The Lady Lions forced 26
North Central turnovers and out rebounded them by only 2, 38 to 36. Both teams
also shot fairly well from the field with North Central shooting 45% and the
Lady Lions shooting 40%.
After
the game three Lady Lions were recognized for the season accomplishments,
sophomore Kayla Droste was named “Second Team All Region”, junior guard Shianne
Montgomery was named “First Team All Region” and junior guard Treva Nutter was
named North Central Region Most Valuable Player. Coach Rachael Nowell was also
named North Central Region Coach of the Year.
The win
means the Lady Lions now advance to the NCCAA DII National Tournament, which is
held at Ohio Christian University in Circleville, Ohio. The tournament runs
March 8th to March 10th.The Lady Lions first game will be
Thursday, March 8th at 8pm vs. #3 Ohio Christian.
