Last weekend our Lions football team traveled to face off with the Mayville State Comets at Jerome Berg Field in Mayville North Dakota. The Lions put forth great effort but lost to the Comets. The Lions went scoreless in the first quarter and started the second down 17-0. In the second quarter, QB Clint Linthicum had a Touchdown pass to Cameron Martell with just 2 minutes left in the half. At the start of the second half the Lions would trail the Comets 31-7. Our Lions were scoreless in the third quarter and went in to the fourth with a score of 41-7. QB Clint Linthicum had two Touchdown passes in the fourth quarter both of which were received by Brandon Welch. The Lions were not able to overcome their deficit and lost with a final score of 54-20.
Head coach Dustin Morgan said “We played our best game of the season. We rang up a lot of yards we just turned the ball over too much. We could have tackled better and played better in the secondary but overall we played very well against a scholarship school. I’m proud of these guys.” Mayville is in the DAC, so it was a tough game. Assistant coach Dusty Hess said “The team continues to improve each week. We’ll get where we need to be if we keep working hard.”
The Lions had 441 total yards on the day, 172 from rushing and 269 from passing. Number 7, Linthicum, went 17 for 38 for a total of 269 yards passing and had 3 touchdown passes. He also netted 53 yards of Rushing. Hight netted 83 yards rushing, Swanson 23, and Emerson 13. Welch Had 5 receptions for 110 yards and 2 TD’s, Emerson caught 4 for a total of 54 yards, Usher had three for 46 yards, Howard 2 for 27 yards, Hight 1 reception for 23 yards, and Martell and Cummins had a catch a piece for 6 and 3 yards respectively. Kendrick Berry led the way in returns with 5 for a total of 68 yards. Emerson was behind him with 2 returns for 36 yards and Howard had 1 for 6 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, Joel Sandoz led the way with 9 unassisted tackles and 1 assisted. Fatir Pillow had 7 UA and 2 AT, Nate Pfitzer had 3 UA and 5 AT, Kyle Swanson had 5 UA and 1 AT, Cameron Martell, Andy Reum, and Ryan Wolfenden had 4 UA each, Marcus Bartell had 3 UA and 1 AT, Caleb Day and Matt Fellers each had 3 UA, Matt Economy and Andrew Lauber with 2 UA each, Clint Linthicum and Brandon Welch each with 1 UA and Trey Halbert with 1 AT. Martell had 2 sacks, Fatir and Martell each had 2 tackles for fumbles and Pfitzer and Bartell each had 1 tackle for fumbles.
Next week our Lions head out on the road again to St. Bonifacius, MN where they will face off against Crown College. Crown is Currently 1-1 on this season so we look forward to a good game there at 1:00 for those who can travel to the game.
