Trinity Bible College Strategic Management and Leadership class is participating in a global competition for the 2008 spring semester with the Business Strategy Game. Created at the University of Alabama, BSG is an online simulation that allows teams of students to own and manage all components of an athletic footwear firm. Using critical thinking skills, students achieve experience through practice in making a variety of business decisions in a method that reflects actual competitive conditions in business environments.
As in the real world, two teams of TBC students are competing to outperform each other, as well as 200 other colleges and universities with 3,339 teams. Among their outside competitors are Southeastern University (A/G) and the Universities of Alabama, Florida, Nebraska, Oregon, South Carolina and South Dakota. BSG measures and rates four measurable variables - Overall Score, Earnings per Share (EPS), Return on Equity (ROE), and Stock Price.
This semester the BSG competition began with a short time of practice then the actual competition began in February. TBC teams "A Company" (Mike Hume, Tiffany Morris, April Skaar, and Amy Strawn) and "B Moon Boots" (Jed Arnold, Adam Vazquez, Laron Wegener, and April Wickman) are currently ranked among the top 100 teams in EPS performance, "A Company" ranks 31st ($13.98) and "B Moon Boots" 66th ($10.91). In addition, A Company was ranked as high as 45th (31.9%) in ROE.
What do these measurements mean? Earnings per Share are the actual profits an individual share of stock earns. Each TBC team began with 1 million shares of stock, which means "A Company" has earned $13.98 million and "B Moon Boots" $10.091 million to date. Return on Equity is a measure of profitability based on the investment of stockholders. Currently, "A Company" is retaining 39.1% of its investment as profit.
